More, and not a small amount more. When you have one working key, adding a spare is a shorter job. The immobilizer already has a valid key registered, so adding another one is a simpler process. Probably not the fob. On these cars the touch-to-unlock feature at the door handle is its own circuit, separate from the fob's lock and unlock buttons. If the buttons work but the handle touch is flaky, start by cleaning the handle area. Dirt and moisture around the sensor face can cause false reads or no reads.

I was parked on a side street in Downtown Oxnard finishing up another job when a message came in from a Focus owner a few blocks away. His fob had been acting flaky for about a week, range getting shorter, sometimes taking three or four presses to lock. That morning it stopped responding altogether and the car was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time he approached.

He had already been to an auto parts store and bought a CR2032 thinking that was it. Fresh battery, same problem. He figured he was looking at a tow and a full day at the dealer.

I told him I was already nearby and could be there in ten minutes.

When I got there I opened the fob and looked at the battery contacts first. The new CR2032 was seated, but the positive contact had a slight outward bow to it, barely visible, probably from someone prying the case with a screwdriver instead of a proper tool. The contact wasn't making solid connection with the battery face. I straightened it, reseated the battery, and closed the case.

That fixed the range and the button response. But because he'd been running with marginal power for a week, I still put the fob through its full function check: lock, unlock, every button, and then confirmed the car was reading the key properly on startup and not showing any warning on the cluster. Everything came back clean.

He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need a tow. He definitely didn't need a dealer appointment and whatever they would have charged him to look at it. The whole stop was under twenty minutes, and I was still close enough to grab lunch on Oxnard Boulevard before my next call.
