2015 Ford Focus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is going with a locksmith actually cheaper than the Ford dealer for a smart key?

On a 2015 Focus, yes, consistently. Dealers price the fob, the cutting, and the programming as separate labor events, and some add a diagnostic or security access fee on top. You also lose the car for a day if it needs a tow. A mobile locksmith rolls to you, does it on site, and quotes one number up front. The savings are a good chunk, not a rounding error.

Q: Does the price include cutting and programming, or are those extra?

Everything is included. The fob, the blade cut to your car, programming to the vehicle's security system, syncing the remote functions, and a full button test before I leave. Dealers frequently split this into separate charges -- one line for the key itself, another for programming labor, sometimes a third for shop supplies or security access.

Q: My 2015 Focus shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What's going on?

This comes up a lot on these cars and the battery is usually the first thing people swap -- but a fresh battery in a worn or cracked fob shell doesn't always fix it. A few things to check before assuming the fob is dead: The battery contact tabs inside the fob can bend slightly over time, especially if someone pried the case open with a screwdriver instead of the proper tool.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2015 Focus. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2015 Focus smart key system does not have a self-programming sequence the owner can run. There's no ignition-turn procedure, no button combination, no DIY relearn. Adding a new fob requires a tool connected to the diagnostic port to communicate with the vehicle's security system and register the new fob's ID. The fob you bought online is a blank -- it won't do anything until it's paired to your specific car.

2015 Ford Focus Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy in Five Points, Oxnard. Nine-thirty at night, dark parking lot, only key to his 2015 Focus was gone. Not misplaced. Gone. He'd turned his pockets inside out twice already.

He was about to call a tow truck. Not because the car needed a tow, just because he didn't know what else to do with a car he couldn't start and couldn't lock.

I asked him for the VIN first. He didn't know where to look. I told him to shine his phone light through the bottom of the windshield on the driver's side. He found it in about ten seconds. Then I had him check his insurance app for the registration, and that was all I needed to confirm ownership and figure out exactly what to bring.

By the time I got there he'd calmed down a little. I had the right fob shell and the right battery with me. Did the work under the parking lot lights. Built the key, programmed it to the car, tested every button, tested the start. The whole thing took less time than he'd spent panicking before he called.

He drove home that night. The dealer was closed and would have had him towing the car in the morning anyway. The VIN is what makes this job fast. It tells me the key type, what fob body I need, and how to approach the programming before I leave my van.

Ford Focus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2015 Ford Focus smart key replacement cost?▼

Call us for exact pricing, but the gap between a mobile locksmith and the dealer on these is real and consistent. Ford dealer quotes for a Focus smart key job -- fob, cutting, programming, and any shop fees -- tend to land well above what we charge, and that's before you factor in towing if the car isn't driveable.
