Got a call from a guy near the Carpinteria Valley Museum area. His 1996 Accent had been sitting for a while, and somewhere between a garage cleanout and a move, the only key disappeared. The Accent's door lock was in decent shape. I decoded the wafers right there at the driver's side, then cut a key on my mobile machine. Tried it in the door, then the ignition. Turned over clean. No chips to program, no immobilizer to reset, no OBD port work. The whole thing was maybe twenty minutes of actual work.

He stood there holding the new key like he expected more steps. I told him that was it. With a 1996 Accent, the lock is the security system. Nothing electronic between the key and the ignition switch.

He got his car running for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost, and he never had to leave his neighborhood.
