2000 Hyundai Accent
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how does it work on the 2000 Accent?

It is a single unit where the key blade and the remote fob are built together as one piece. You turn it in the ignition like a regular key, and it also has buttons on the head for locking and unlocking the doors remotely. On the 2000 Accent, the remote portion communicates with a receiver module mounted in the vehicle. The key blade handles the ignition side, and the fob head handles the remote entry side.

Q: How long does the dealer process actually take for an Accent key replacement?

On an older vehicle like the 2000 Accent, dealers are not always set up to prioritize legacy key work. Parts for these can require ordering, and programming appointments are booked around newer vehicles. Owners have reported waiting several days just to get an appointment slot, then additional time waiting on the part to come in. The two visits become three if anything falls through. With a mobile locksmith, it is one call, one visit, done on location.

Q: My 2000 Accent key starts the car fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not always. On the 2000 Accent, the ignition function and the remote function are independent of each other in how they fail. If the key turns and the car starts normally, the issue is isolated to the remote side. First thing to check is the battery in the fob head. These cells can get old and lose enough charge to kill the remote without affecting ignition at all.

Q: I bought a replacement remote head key online for my 2000 Accent. Can I program it myself?

On some older Hyundai models from this era, there is an onboard programming sequence that owners can attempt using a specific series of ignition and door-lock steps. Whether it works depends on the exact configuration of your vehicle and whether you still have a working original key to start the sequence. Results from owners on forums are mixed, some get it to take, others cycle through the steps and get nothing.

2000 Hyundai Accent Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman parked at the Vons off Wendy Drive in Newbury Park called me about her 2000 Accent. The remote had stopped locking and unlocking her doors, and she figured the whole key was shot.

She had already called the dealer. The service advisor told her they would need to order the part and schedule her for a programming appointment, and she would be looking at a wait. She did not love that answer, especially for a car she drives every day.

When I got to her in the lot, the first thing I did was check the basics on the fob side. The battery had been in there a long time. On these early remote head keys, a weak battery does not just shorten range, it can make the remote appear completely dead while the key itself keeps starting the car just fine.

Fresh battery, test the buttons. Still nothing. So the issue was either the fob itself or the receiver module inside the car.

I had a replacement unit with me. Got it cut to her car right there, ran through the programming sequence, and walked her through testing every function before I packed up. Remote working, key starting the car, done in the lot in about 35 minutes.

The dealer comparison was not even something she brought up twice. She just said she wished she had called me first.

Hyundai Accent Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Hyundai dealer to get a replacement key for my 2000 Accent?▼

No. A mobile locksmith can handle this job on-site. The 2000 Accent remote head key can be cut and programmed without a dealer visit or a dealer appointment. The dealer route on older Hyundais like this one often involves ordering parts, waiting for them to arrive, then scheduling a separate service appointment. That can stretch into days or longer depending on parts availability.
