Over in the Lynn Ranch neighborhood in Thousand Oaks, an Accent owner flagged me down through a call about her 2004 GL. The key still turned, the engine still ran, but the plastic head was split along the seam and the blade was wobbling in the housing. She had been squeezing it together every time she turned the ignition, and one day the transponder chip almost fell out into her lap.

I met her in the driveway. Pulled the key apart on her porch table, confirmed the Philips ID46 chip was intact and reading clean on my programmer. The blade was an HYN12 cut, still matched the door and ignition cylinders fine. No wear on the wafers worth worrying about. I moved the working chip and blade into a new shell, made sure the transponder seated properly, and tested the immobilizer response with the key in the ignition. Cranked right up first turn, immobilizer light went out within a second like it should.
She kept her working internals, got a solid new shell, and never left her driveway. Cost her a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
