Got a call from a guy in the Downtown Carpinteria area who had a 1997 Hyundai Accent sitting in a lot near Linden Avenue with zero keys. He bought it as a project car from a neighbor who lost the only key years ago and had been starting it with a screwdriver. New owner wanted to do it right.
The nice thing about a first-gen Accent is there's no immobilizer to fight. Hyundai didn't start putting transponder systems on the Accent until the second generation around 2000. The '97 X3 is straightforward metal: a mechanical ignition cylinder, mechanical door locks, mechanical trunk lock. Cut the right key, it works.
I pulled the door lock cylinder to decode it. The HY14 keyway on these is pretty forgiving to read. Got my cuts, made the key on the mobile machine in the van, and tested every lock on the car, ignition included. Turned over on the first try.
He stood there turning the key back and forth in the ignition like he was making sure it was real. Then he locked and unlocked the driver door a few times. I get it. When a car has been screwdriver-started for who knows how long, a working key feels like a big deal.
Whole thing took about 20 minutes. A dealer would have wanted to order parts and schedule an appointment days out, assuming they'd even touch a car this old.
