1997 Hyundai Accent
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1997 Hyundai Accent actually take?

A straight mechanical key, cut to the car. No remote, no battery, no buttons. You put it in the door lock, you put it in the ignition, you turn it. That is the whole system. If you have a working key to copy from, a locksmith can duplicate it. If you have lost all keys, a locksmith can decode your lock cylinder and cut a new one to match.

Q: What does a locksmith charge compared to a dealer for a 1997 Accent key?

On a car this age with a mechanical key, a dealer is rarely the right call anyway. They may not even stock the key blank anymore, and some will turn you away or tell you to try a hardware store. A mobile locksmith is the faster and cheaper path. I come to you, decode or copy the key on site, and you are done in a fraction of the time and cost of any dealer visit. Call for current pricing.

Q: Can I get a spare key made from the original, or does someone need to come to the car?

If you have a working original, a locksmith can duplicate it without touching the car at all. Bring the key, get a copy cut. Simple. Where it gets more involved is when there is no original left. In that case, I need to work from the lock itself, either by decoding the cylinder or by picking and reading the cuts. That means I come to the vehicle.

Q: My 1997 Accent key turns but feels wrong in the ignition. Do I need a new ignition or just a new key?

Probably just a worn key. After 25-plus years, the cuts on an original key can round off enough that the ignition wafer tumblers are not seating cleanly. That creates that gritty or stiff feel, and in worse cases the ignition will not turn at all without jiggling. First step is cutting a fresh key decoded directly from the lock cylinder.

1997 Hyundai Accent Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy staying at a rental near Sandyland Cove in Carpinteria called me on a Saturday afternoon. He had locked his only key inside his 1997 Hyundai Accent and the spare was sitting on his kitchen counter back home. No roadside, no backup plan.

I drove out to him. The car is a simple setup, no keyless entry, no fob, just a mechanical key and a lock cylinder. I picked the door to get him inside, then decoded the lock so I could cut him a working replacement right there on the spot. No towing, no waiting on a dealer parts order, no Monday morning.

He asked if the new key would need any programming. It does not. On a 1997 Accent, you cut the key to the car and that is the whole job. The key either fits the cylinder and turns the ignition or it does not. His new key worked on the first try, doors and ignition both.

The dealer could not have done that in a parking lot in Carpinteria on a Saturday. That is the part people always seem surprised by.

Hyundai Accent Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does key replacement cost so much at some shops even for an older car like this?▼

On a 1997 Hyundai Accent, it should not. This is a mechanical key, no chip, no programming, no immobilizer enrollment. The job is cutting a key to fit your specific lock and ignition. Some shops charge extra for older vehicles because they have to look up the key profile or decode the lock if there is no original to copy. That is a fair cost for the skill involved.
