I got a call from a guy in Westlake Village, over near the Promenade side of Thousand Oaks. His 2006 Accent had been sitting in a covered parking spot for a few days while he was traveling, and when he came back the remote wasn't doing anything. Car started fine with the key. Remote was dead.
He figured it was the battery. Swapped in a new CR2032, same result. Nothing on lock, nothing on unlock, nothing on the third button. He found me online and asked if he needed to come to a dealer.
I drove out to the lot. First thing I did was pull the fob apart and check the battery contacts. They were slightly oxidized, probably from sitting in a hot glove box for a couple of years before he even bought the car used. Cleaned the contacts, seated the new CR2032 he had already put in, and then ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to confirm the fob was still registered.
It was registered. The contacts were the whole problem.
Tested all three buttons standing at the car, then walked about 30 feet back and tested again. Everything was working. He asked what the dealer would have done. Probably replaced the fob entirely and charged him for programming on top of parts, was my honest answer.
He didn't need any of that. He needed clean contacts and someone who didn't default to replacing everything first.
