1996 Hyundai Elantra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was called out to Blackstock in Oxnard on a Tuesday morning. The owner of a 1996 Hyundai Elantra had a key that was starting to bind in the door lock. It would turn, but with that grinding, reluctant feeling that tells you the blade is worn down and the wafers are starting to protest. He had one key left and no spare, and he was nervous about forcing it.
The car had been sitting in his driveway for a couple of years between regular use and he had never gotten around to cutting a spare. Now the only key he had was showing its age.
I decoded the door lock on site. The lock cylinder still had clean enough wafers on the door side to give me a solid read. From there I cut a replacement key blade to match the vehicle and verified it in both the door and the ignition before I called it done.
He watched the whole thing from his porch, coffee in hand, expecting it to take most of the morning. It did not. The lock decoded clean, the cut came out right the first time, and both the door and ignition turned smoothly.
He mentioned he had called the dealer first. They told him they had no record of a key code for a car that old and suggested he have it towed in so they could look at the ignition cylinder. That was going to be a multi-day job at a cost he was not happy about. He found me twenty minutes later and we handled it in his driveway for a fraction of that.
