I was already in the College area of Ventura wrapping up another call when this one came in. Guy was staying at a place off Telegraph, work trip, and his 2022 Elantra had gone completely dark on him. Push-button start would not respond. The cluster was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time he got in. He had one fob, no spare, and the emergency metal key inside the fob got him into the car but that was it.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and they could get to it the following afternoon. He was supposed to be back on a job site by morning.
I told him I was ten minutes away.
When I got there he was standing in the parking lot with the fob in his hand, clicking it at the car like something was going to change. I asked him when he last swapped the battery. He said never, and the car was two years old. The CR2032 was reading low enough that the car could still pick up a faint signal at the door handle but could not authenticate it fully for the start system. That explained the split behavior: doors sometimes responding, push-button start refusing every time.
New battery fixed the range and the door handles. But the start system still was not happy, and after checking it on my equipment I could see the fob had a registration issue, likely from running on a dying battery long enough that the rolling code sync had drifted. Happens on these.
I re-enrolled the fob through the OBD port, let the process run, and tested every button and both door handles before I called it done. He did a couple of start cycles himself just to feel confident about it.
He made his job site. The dealer never got a call back.
