A woman at an event near the Ventura County Fairgrounds flagged me down while I was finishing up another call. She had a 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS parked in one of the side lots, and her key had snapped clean at the bow while she was turning the ignition. Half the blade was still inside the cylinder.
She had already called a dealer. They told her they would need to see the car in person, likely order a new ignition cylinder, and it could take a few days. For a twenty-five-year-old Elantra. She just wanted to get home.
I pulled the broken piece out of the cylinder with extraction hooks. Took about four minutes. The cylinder was fine, no damage. Then I decoded the existing lock wafers right there and cut a fresh HY14 blank on my mobile machine. No transponder to worry about on this year. Turned the ignition, fired right up.
She asked about getting a spare with remote buttons. I set her up with an aftermarket remote head key, same mechanical cut, with lock, unlock, and panic buttons. On the 2000 Elantra the remote is just a radio signal for the door locks, totally separate from starting the car. Programmed the remote to her receiver and tested every button at the door.
She kept the broken half of the old key in her cup holder like some kind of souvenir. Whole thing took about twenty minutes, for a fraction of what the dealer was going to charge her just to look at it.
