Got a call from a guy at Surfers Point in Ventura. He'd been fishing, came back to his 2001 Hyundai Elantra, and the key just would not turn the ignition. He was wiggling it, jiggling the steering wheel, doing all the stuff people try. Nothing.
When I got there, I could see the key blade was worn down pretty badly. Original Hyundai key, HYN14 blank, probably the same one since 2001. Twenty-plus years of daily use will grind a blade smooth enough that the wafers inside the cylinder stop reading the cuts. The transponder chip was fine. The immobilizer light was behaving normally. It was purely mechanical.
I cut a fresh key on an HYN14R blank using his door lock to decode the depths, then programmed the ID46 chip through the Smartra module with my VVDI Key Tool. Three clean starts, tested the doors, confirmed the immobilizer light settled after each crank.
He told me he'd found my YouTube channel months ago. Watched a Hyundai key job and saved my number, figured he'd need it someday. When I handed him the new key he turned it over a few times, compared it to his old one, and just said "that's a real cut." He could feel the difference in how the fresh blade engaged the cylinder.
