2001 Hyundai Elantra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2001 Hyundai Elantra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in the College area of Ventura on a Tuesday morning, parked near one of the side streets that runs along the neighborhood.

The call came from a guy who had driven his 2001 Elantra for years without a single key issue, and then one week everything went sideways at once. The lock button on his remote head key stopped responding, then the unlock. He figured it was the battery, swapped it, and still nothing from the fob side. The blade still worked, so he was driving the car, just unlocking the door by hand every time.

When I looked at the fob portion of the head key, the battery contacts had a visible layer of oxidation on them. Classic sign of a slow leak from an old cell that had been sitting in there too long. I cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh battery, and tested. Nothing. The receiver module in the car was not picking up the signal at all.

The issue turned out to be that the replacement key he had bought a while back had never actually been paired to the car. He had been using the original key, which gave out, and the backup he had on the ring was an unprogrammed unit someone had handed him years ago. We programmed the backup unit to the vehicle on site, tested all the buttons from across the parking area, and that was it. He drove off unlocking his doors like a normal person again.

He mentioned the dealer wanted him to leave the car and come back in two days. He lives in the College neighborhood. Leaving your only car somewhere for two days when you have places to be is not a real option. The mobile route saved him that whole headache, for a fraction of what they wanted.
