2020 Hyundai Elantra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Always. When you have a working key in hand, adding a spare is a quick programming job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer has to be fully reset using a PIN pulled from the vehicle, and every key you want active has to be programmed in that same session from scratch. It takes longer, it requires more from the diagnostic equipment, and that's reflected in the price.

Q: Are aftermarket Hyundai smart keys worth buying, or should I stick with OEM?

Aftermarket fobs are cheaper upfront, but the quality is inconsistent enough that it's a real gamble. Locksmiths who work Hyundais regularly will tell you that cheap online fobs fail to program at a surprisingly high rate, and some that look correct for the year and model turn out to be mismatched once you're in the programming sequence. The other issue is fitment claims.

Q: My 2020 Elantra shows a key warning on the dash even though the fob is in my hand. What's going on?

This comes up a lot with this generation. A key-not-detected warning while the fob is present usually points to one of three things: a low or dead CR2032, the fob antenna losing communication because of interference, or a fob that's been damaged internally, often from a drop or water exposure. Start with the battery. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, try holding the fob directly against the start button when you press it.

Q: I bought a used 2020 Elantra and it came with only one key. Should I get a spare made now?

Yes, and sooner rather than later. One working key means one point of failure. If that fob gets lost, damaged, or stops communicating, you're in all-keys-lost territory, which costs noticeably more than a simple spare add. Getting a second key programmed while the original is still functional is the cheaper, easier job every time. I come to you anywhere in Ventura, including Ventura Harbor, so there's no reason to wait until you're stuck.

2020 Hyundai Elantra Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked in his driveway over in Ventura Harbor at about 12:30 in the morning. His 2020 Elantra had push-button start and his only fob had gone completely dark. No response, no lock, no unlock, nothing. The car wouldn't acknowledge it at all. He'd already been online looking at flatbed rates for the morning.

I told him to stay put.

When I pulled up, he was sitting on his front step with his phone, half convinced he was going to lose the whole next day to a dealer appointment and a tow. I walked up, popped the OBD port, connected my diagnostic tool, and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the Elantra's immobilizer. The process pulls the vehicle PIN and walks through key registration from scratch, erasing whatever was there before. His fob, a four-button unit matching the factory spec for this car, got registered on site.

Start button. Engine turned over. He just stood there for a second.

He hadn't thought about the fact that a locksmith could do this in a driveway at 1am. The dealer couldn't have touched it until the next business day at the earliest, and that's before you add a tow and the wait time. He saved a significant chunk and didn't lose a day of work.

Most Hyundais on the road right now are well within reach for mobile all-keys-lost work. Midnight in a driveway is not a problem for me.

Hyundai Elantra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for my 2020 Elantra?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Hyundai dealers typically quote owners a significant amount for a single smart key replacement, and that number doesn't include any towing if the car isn't drivable. Some owners have reported the dealer outsources the actual programming work to a mobile tech anyway, and the markup is steep. With EZ Car Keyz, you get the key cut, programmed, and tested on site in Ventura.
