I was already heading toward Mussel Shoals when the call came through. The wife was on the line because her husband was still dealing with the police report. His jacket had been grabbed off the back of a booth at a restaurant in Ventura, keys inside. The 2009 Elantra was sitting in the parking lot with no way in and no way to start it.
The Hyundai dealer had already told her the car would need to be towed to them, that it would take the better part of a week, and that they wanted to clear and reprogram the immobilizer on top of everything else. The number she read back to me was not small.
I got there while he was still on the phone with the officer. The Elantra has a pretty direct process for all-keys-lost: access the immobilizer through the OBD port, wipe the old key data so the stolen key can't do anything useful, then register fresh keys from scratch. I decoded the door lock to pull the cut, programmed two new transponder keys on site, and confirmed both started the car cleanly before I packed up.
He drove home that night. The stolen key, wherever it ended up, is electronically useless now. Wiping the key memory means it won't start the car and it won't turn in that ignition. It's just metal at this point.
The dealer option would have meant a tow truck, days without the car, and a bill that was a lot harder to swallow. He saved a good chunk, and he had two working keys before the case number came through.
