I got a call from a guy parked near Faria Beach, right where PCH runs along the coast. He had been out for an early walk and came back to his 2025 Elantra sitting there not acknowledging him at all. The door handle wouldn't respond to his touch, the dash stayed dark when he got in, and the push-button start just threw a key-not-detected warning at him. He had the fob in his hand the whole time.
He figured it was the battery. He was right, but also not quite right.
When I got there he had already bought a replacement battery at the gas station up the road. The cell he grabbed was a CR2032. Common size, wrong one. The CR2450 this fob needs is noticeably thicker, and the CR2032 was sitting in there with enough slop that it would make contact sometimes and lose it the moment the fob flexed in his pocket. Worked occasionally, failed when it mattered.
I swapped in the correct CR2450, reseated it, and went through every button. Lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons all came back clean. Touch unlock on both front handles, start button reading the fob from the center console, everything behaved.
He laughed when he realized the gas station battery was still sitting on my passenger seat. I told him it happens constantly and to keep the old fob cover because the clips on these are easy to lose.
He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need a programmer. He needed the right two-dollar part and someone who would come to him.
