I got a call from a guy near the community center at the edge of College Estates. He'd already paid another locksmith to make him a key for his 1999 Hyundai Elantra. The key looked right, turned in the ignition, the engine cranked. Then it died after about two seconds, every single time. The other locksmith told him the immobilizer module was bad and walked away from the job.
That diagnosis didn't sit right with me. A failed module usually gives you nothing. Crank with a quick stall is almost always a key learn problem.
When I got there, I decoded the blade to confirm the cut was even correct first. It was close but not right, which explained part of the problem. I cut a replacement blade to the proper depth and spacing, then ran the registration sequence through the OBD port. The previous attempt had left partial data sitting in memory, so I cleared it out, let the system reset, and ran a clean learn with the full timed cycle. That confirmation step at the end is where the first tech quit early. Skipping it means the key writes temporarily and gets dropped the next time the car powers down.
First start after the clean registration, the engine ran. He sat there for a second like he was waiting for it to stall again. It didn't.
He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him before he went the locksmith route the first time. It was a number that made him wince. What he paid me was a fraction of that, even counting the first guy's incomplete work, which I couldn't undo the billing on. I could just make sure it was finally done right.
