Got a call from a guy near Oxnard State Beach Park who was having a rough day with his 1999 Hyundai Elantra. He told me he had already paid another locksmith to make him a key, and the car would crank but die after about two seconds every time. Classic immobilizer rejection, except on most 1999 Elantras, there is no immobilizer to reject anything.
I drove out and took a look. The other locksmith had sold him a transponder key, assuming every Hyundai from this era needed one. This car did not have an immobilizer module at all. No security light on the dash, no transponder ring around the ignition cylinder. It was a plain mechanical key vehicle the whole time.
The real problem was simpler and dumber. The key the other guy cut was just cut poorly. Enough to turn the cylinder partway, enough to engage the starter, but not seated deep enough to let the ignition switch complete its full travel. The car cranked because the starter circuit closed, but the run position never held.
I used my HY14 Lishi to decode the wafers right out of the ignition, cut a clean key on my Xhorse Condor, and it fired on the first turn. Smooth rotation, full switch travel, engine stayed running.
He had already spent money on a bad key and a wrong diagnosis. I just made sure the next key was the right one.
