Near the Botanic Garden Area in Thousand Oaks, a woman called me about her 2018 Elantra. She'd bought it used a couple of years back with one fob. One. She knew she should have gotten a spare made, kept meaning to, and then the fob housing gave out on her. Cracked clean along the seam, probably from being dropped one too many times. She tried using the emergency blade to get into the door manually while she figured out next steps, and the blade snapped off inside the lock cylinder.
So she was standing there with the broken fob body in one hand, no blade, and no way into the car.
I got there with my equipment and started with the door. Extracted the blade fragment, then decoded the lock cylinder to confirm the key cut. That gave me what I needed to cut fresh metal without hunting down a key code from a dealer.
The fob itself was cracked but the internals were intact. The circuit board and the transponder chip inside the housing had survived. I transferred everything into a new fob shell and retained the original programmed hardware, which meant I could skip a full all-keys-lost reset and just verify the existing key was reading correctly against the vehicle. Then I cut a second key and programmed a second fob so she'd actually have a backup this time.
Total time on site was about 40 minutes. She watched the whole thing on the hood of her car.
The dealer conversation never really came up until the end, when she mentioned they'd told her to "just come in" like it would be a quick, affordable errand. It wouldn't have been.
