Out in the Erbes Road neighborhood in Thousand Oaks, a guy with a 2017 Elantra Limited called me after his key blade snapped off inside the ignition. Half the blade stuck in the cylinder, half still in his hand. He had already called another locksmith who quoted him a full ignition replacement over the phone. New cylinder, new keys, the whole deal.
I told him to sit tight.
When I got there, the break was clean. No jagged edges jammed sideways in the wafers. I used my HY14 Lishi to extract the broken fragment without scraping the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. Once the piece slid out, I decoded the lock right off the wafer positions, cut a fresh HY18 blade, and married the new transponder through the OBD port. His fob shell and electronics were fine. The SY5MDFNA433 board, all four buttons, the passive entry antenna, all working. He just needed a new blade and a fresh Hitag2 chip programmed to the car.
No drilling. No cylinder swap. No ordering a new ignition assembly from the dealer and waiting two weeks for the part. His original lock works with the new key exactly like before.
He kept flipping the new key open and shut like he was testing it. I get that a lot. People want to believe it before they drive off.
Whole thing took me about 25 minutes.
