A call came in from Wildwood on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy was parked in his driveway, had a working key, but his 2017 Elantra had been showing a key-not-detected warning for three days. He figured the battery was dead, swapped it, and the warning cleared for about six hours. Then it came back. He assumed the fob was failing and started pricing dealer replacements. When I pulled up, I asked him to hand me both the fob and the battery he had just installed. The battery was correct, CR2032, right off the shelf. I opened the fob on his hood. The new battery was seated but the contact clip had a slight outward bow to it, meaning the cell was making contact just well enough to read on a meter but not consistently enough to hold a stable signal. Classic. I straightened the clip, cleaned the contact faces, and reseated the battery.
Then I walked every function. Lock, unlock, panic, and the fourth button. Touch unlock on both door handles. Push-button start from the driver seat and from outside the vehicle at distance. Everything held.
He had already mentally budgeted for a full fob replacement and programming visit at the dealer, which would have meant an appointment, possibly days out, and a bill that would have stung. Took me about twenty minutes in his driveway. He kept saying he felt like he should have caught it himself. I told him that clip is the one thing nobody talks about online.
