I got a call from a guy near the community center off Juanamaria. He was frustrated before he even finished explaining. Another locksmith had already been out for his 2006 Hyundai Elantra. New key cut, programming attempted, money paid. Car would crank, idle for about two seconds, then die. Every single time.

The previous tech told him the immobilizer module was bad and walked.

I've seen that story before. The module is almost never the problem. The engine cranking and then cutting out is a textbook incomplete key registration. I connected through the OBD port, cleared the incomplete registration data left over from the first attempt, and ran a clean enrollment with the full learn cycle, including waiting out the timed confirmation step that a lot of techs try to rush through. When the tool showed the key stored permanently, I had him try it himself. Started and stayed running.

He'd already paid someone else and gotten nothing. I couldn't fix that part. But at least this time he could see the confirmation on the screen himself before I packed up. He left with a car that started and a clear explanation of what had actually gone wrong.

The dealer comparison came up at the end, almost as an aside. He said he'd called the dealership first and the number they quoted was steep enough that he went looking for another option. I was that option, and I actually finished the job.
