2003 Hyundai Elantra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman near Ventura County Medical Center. Her 2003 Elantra would not start, and she had somewhere to be. The key turned, dash lights came on, but the engine just cranked and quit. Classic immobilizer rejection.

I pulled up, verified her ID and registration, then got to work. The original key blade was worn thin on the high cuts, which is normal on a 20-year-old Hyundai HY15 blank. Decoded the lock, cut a fresh blade on a new remote head shell with the ID46 chip inside.

Connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash. On the XD Elantra the immobilizer module sits behind the instrument cluster, and the diagnostic reads the PIN from the Smartra unit so I can register the new transponder. Wrote the chip, waited through the security handshake, and the car fired right up.

Then the part most people don't expect. I walked across the lot, tested lock and unlock range from about 30 feet, hit panic, killed it, restarted three times in a row. She was sitting on a bench watching me pace back and forth pressing buttons like I lost something.

I told her those five extra minutes of testing are the difference between a key that works today and one that still works in January. She said nobody explained the transponder thing to her before. She just thought keys were keys.

Whole thing took about 35 minutes, right in the parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her over the phone.
