1998 Hyundai Elantra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I really have to tow my 1998 Elantra to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. Dealers will tell you that's the only option, but it isn't. We bring the tools to you. For a late-90s Elantra, the key cutting and remote programming process doesn't require the car to be on a dealer lift or connected to proprietary dealer software the way some newer vehicles do. We come to your location, whether that's a parking lot off Channel Islands Harbor or your driveway in Oxnard, and handle the whole job there.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 1998 Elantra?

Usually well under an hour from the time I arrive. Cutting the blade and programming the remote on a vehicle this age moves faster than on modern push-button systems because the security architecture is simpler and there's no lengthy security-access countdown built into the process. I test every function before I leave, so you're not finding out later that one button doesn't work.

Q: My 1998 Elantra key turns fine but the remote buttons do nothing. Is the fob dead or is it the car?

Nine times out of ten on these older remote head keys, it's the fob side, not the car. The receiver in the vehicle rarely fails on its own. Start with the battery. These fobs are old enough now that even a "fresh" replacement battery from a dusty shelf can be weak. If the battery checks out, open the fob carefully and look at the contact tabs.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself for a 1998 Elantra?

The remote programming on this generation can sometimes be done through an onboard sequence without a separate programming tool, which is different from how newer Hyundais work. That said, the key blade still needs to be cut to your vehicle, and if the self-programming sequence doesn't complete cleanly, you'll need someone with the right equipment to finish it. If you already bought a replacement fob online, call me before you start button sequences on your own.

1998 Hyundai Elantra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the marina at Channel Islands Harbor. He'd already been through it once before.

He called a locksmith off a cheap Google ad, the guy showed up, charged him way more than the quote, and the job wasn't right. He found me through Google Guaranteed and before he even told me what was wrong with the car, he asked how to verify I was licensed.

I gave him my BSIS license number right on the phone. He pulled up the state site and checked it while we were still talking. That kind of skepticism after getting burned once is completely reasonable, and honestly it's the right move.

The vehicle was a 1998 Hyundai Elantra. The remote portion of his remote head key had stopped responding. Locks wouldn't trigger, nothing. But the key still turned the ignition fine. When I got there and opened the fob side of the unit, one of the battery contact tabs had a hairline fracture from a previous battery swap. It wasn't making consistent contact, so the remote circuit was cutting in and out depending on how the key sat in his hand.

I sorted the contact, confirmed the remote was pairing and triggering the locks correctly, and walked him through every button before I packed up. He'd been expecting a long diagnostic or a full replacement. It didn't need either.

The dealer option came up briefly. He'd called them first and they wanted him to come in, which would have meant time off work and probably a parts order on top of the labor. He paid a fraction of that, right there in the parking lot with a view of the harbor.

Hyundai Elantra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1998 Hyundai Elantra. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on this generation is something we handle on site. The 1998 Elantra uses a mechanical key cut combined with a remote that's integrated into the head. For the key itself, we can decode the lock or cut to the key code so you get a working blade. The remote side gets programmed to your vehicle's receiver. The lost keys stop working once the new ones are registered. No tow, no waiting on a dealer parts order.
