Out in Newbury Park, near the back end of the Thousand Oaks side where it butts up against the 101, I got a call from a guy who had snapped his key in the ignition of his 2010 Hyundai Elantra. Not halfway, not a crack. Snapped clean, with half the blade still seated in the cylinder.
He had already called another locksmith. That locksmith listened to about thirty seconds of the story and quoted him for a full ignition replacement, new cylinder and all, sight unseen. He wasn't sure about it, so he called me.
I showed up with extraction tools and went to work on the broken fragment first. The goal is always to get it out without touching the wafer stack, because the moment you disturb those wafers you lose your ability to decode the cut from the lock itself. Got the fragment out clean.
From there I decoded the lock directly, read the cut depths, and used that to produce a new key blade matched to his car. Then I pulled up the OBD port and programmed the transponder chip so the immobilizer would recognize the new key. Tested it through a full start cycle before I packed up.
He watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When the car started on the first turn, he went quiet for a second and then said he had been stressing about this since the morning. The other locksmith's phone quote would have cost him a new ignition assembly he never needed. His original cylinder works fine.
