Got a call from a shop foreman over at an alignment place in Manning Park, Montecito. A customer's 2003 Mazda 6 was sitting in their bay, dead to the world. Another locksmith had tried programming a transponder key earlier that day, and something went sideways during the security access timing. The immobilizer module locked into a fault state. The other tech packed up and left.

On these first-gen Mazda 6 platforms (GG chassis, built 2002 to 2008), the immobilizer has a timed security sequence. Whole thing took about an hour and fifteen minutes, most of that just letting the security timer do its thing. The alternative was a tow to a Mazda dealer and a wait measured in days, not minutes. The foreman just shook his head and said he wished he had called me first.
