I got a call from a guy parked near the Limoneira grove side of Santa Paula on a weekday morning. He had driven out to check on something before work, the 2016 Mazda 6 shut off normally, and when he came back maybe fifteen minutes later the fob did nothing. Not weak, not intermittent. Nothing.

When I arrived I opened the fob right in front of him. The CR2025 inside looked fine at a glance, but the positive contact had a very slight upward bow, just enough that the cell was not sitting flush under pressure. I reset the contact, reseated the battery, closed the housing, and handed it back.
He clicked lock from about twenty feet. It worked. Then he walked across the gravel toward the tree line and tried from further out. Still worked.
I did not stop there. I tested all four buttons, ran lock and unlock from distance, verified the emergency blade released cleanly, and had him start the car three times in a row. On the third start I watched the dash to confirm no warning lights held on. Everything was clean.
That whole visit took under twenty minutes. He mentioned the dealer had told him on a previous visit that a smart key replacement for this car would take a day because they would need to order the fob. He left for work on time and spent nothing on a new key he did not need.
