Saturday afternoon near the California Oil Museum in Santa Paula. A guy with his Mazda 6 in the parking area, standing next to it with his hands in his pockets. He had one working smart key left, and the valet blade inside it had snapped off at the neck weeks ago. He had been getting by with push-button start alone, but then the battery in the fob started going soft and the car stopped detecting it at the door handles. He was pressing the fob flat against the start button just to get the engine going.
I pulled the broken blade stub out of the fob housing first. Then I decoded his door lock, cut a fresh emergency insert blade on my machine, and fit it back into the WAZSKE13D01 shell so he had a physical backup again.
For the second fob, I connected my IM508S to the OBD port, accessed the keyless control module, pulled the PIN from the system, and ran key registration. The Mazda security countdown ran its cycle while we talked about oil rigs and the museum across the street.
Then the part people don't expect. I walked about 30 feet across the lot hitting lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Walked back. Three cold starts in a row. Tested the door handle touch sensors on both front doors. Everything clean.
He thought he needed a dealer appointment and a tow. He got both keys working on a Saturday, on site, for way less than the dealer would have quoted for just one.
