A roofing contractor called me just after 6:30 in the morning from a supply yard off the main commercial strip in Ventura. His crew was already there, materials were staged, and his 2011 Mazda 6 would not respond to the smart key at all. No door unlock, no start. He had one fob and it had gone completely dark.

The fob battery was reading dead on my tester. I swapped in a fresh CR2025 and the fob came back to life, but the vehicle's keyless system had lost sync during whatever happened overnight. That is a known behavior on these: if the receiver loses communication with the fob for long enough, it drops the pairing and a battery swap alone does not fix it. The module needs the key re-registered through the diagnostic port.
I connected my tool, went through the re-registration sequence, and waited out the built-in security delay that the system requires. You cannot rush that part. Total hands-on time was right around 30 minutes.
He was loaded and pulling out of that yard before 7:30. The dealer option would have meant a tow, a service appointment, and a crew standing around billing hours. He saved a serious amount of money and a full lost workday.
I did not mention the dealer thing to him. He already knew.
