Out in Ojai's East End, I pulled up to a house off Foothill Drive for what the owner described as a "fob that's being weird." She had a 2020 Mazda 6 and a spare key she'd been meaning to get cut for two years. The daily driver fob was working maybe half the time, and she'd already swapped the battery twice.
She handed me the fob and I could feel it before I even opened it. The case had a slight flex to it, like someone had wedged something in there instead of using the release latch properly. Inside, the positive battery clip was bent just enough to make intermittent contact. The CR2025 she had in there was the right spec, just not sitting flush.
I straightened the clip, seated a new CR2025 correctly, and snapped the case back the right way. Then we walked all four buttons, tested the touch-unlock on both front handles, and I verified the start system was reading the fob cleanly. All of it working again in about ten minutes.
For the spare, she wanted OEM quality but wasn't excited about dealer pricing. I carry aftermarket blanks that have gone through enough Mazda jobs that I trust them. Cut the blade to match her door lock, enrolled the new fob through the OBD port, and verified the immobilizer accepted it. She had a working spare for the first time since she bought the car.
The dealer conversation came up almost as an aside at the end. She'd called them before reaching me and wasn't happy with what she heard. We didn't spend much time on that comparison. The job was done, both keys worked, and I was back on the road inside an hour.
