Out in Santa Paula, East Area 2, I got a call from a woman who walks dogs for a living. She was parked near a pet supply store and her 2015 Mazda 6 would not cooperate. Push-to-start was showing a key-not-detected warning, but only sometimes. Some mornings it fired right up. Other times she was sitting there pressing the button, fob in hand, going nowhere.

When I got there I pulled the fob apart on the hood and looked at the cell first. CR2025, nearly dead. That alone can turn a marginal situation into a daily problem. The previous work had used a transponder that was close to what Mazda specifies for this system, but not the right match. On these Mazda keyless setups, a near-correct chip can clear the initial registration handshake and even survive a few drive cycles before the system catches the mismatch during deeper verification. That is exactly what happened to her. It passed, then it slowly failed.
I programmed a fresh key with the correct transponder, verified the fob functions all four buttons, and walked her through the backup start-button method in case the battery ever runs low again before she can swap it.
She mentioned what the dealer quoted her when she first called them. I did not match that number, I came in well under it, and I was already gone by the time she would have still been waiting for a dealer appointment.
