Out in Matilija, the calls I remember aren't always the complicated ones. Sometimes it's the ones where the owner already did everything right and still ended up stuck.
This guy had driven his 2021 Mazda 6 out to spend the morning near the canyon. He'd put a fresh battery in his fob the week before. He knew exactly what kind it was, even kept the receipt. When he came back to the car after a hike, the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and the push-button start ignored him completely. He tried the backup holdover against the start button. Nothing. He'd watched enough of my videos to know what to try, and he'd already tried it.
I pulled up to him in Matilija about forty minutes later. First thing I did was open the fob and look at the battery he'd installed. CR2025, correct. But the positive face was sitting at a slight angle against the contact plate. Not enough to see without looking for it. Enough to drop the output below what the antenna needed.
I reseated it, cleaned both contact points, snapped it back together, and held it to the start button. Dash came on clean. I walked all four buttons, did three cold starts from the driver's seat, then tested detection range across the length of the car.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone to finish the job the battery swap started. That's most of what mobile work actually is: being thorough when the obvious fix almost worked.
The dealer conversation never came up. He'd already done the math on that before he called.
