A guy near Chumash Park in Ventura called me after watching one of my Mazda smart key videos on YouTube. He had a 2014 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, and the fob had been losing range for a couple weeks. By the time he called, he was holding it against the start button just to get the car running, which meant the CR2025 was basically gone and he was riding on the backup reader every morning.
He had already swapped the battery himself. Twice. Still weak. That is the part most people miss. The CR2025 sits in a shallow tray inside the WAZSKE13D01 housing, and if the contact plate gets bent even slightly during a battery swap, the new cell does not make full contact. Looks right, tests wrong.
I opened the fob on his kitchen table. Contact was pushed down just enough to lose pressure. Straightened it, seated a fresh CR2025, and snapped the case back together. Then I walked out to the car and did the full check: all four buttons from 30 feet, both front door touch-to-unlock sensors, push-button start from the driver seat with the fob in a pocket, then in a bag on the back seat.
He thought the whole fob was shot. Would have paid the dealer for a full replacement and programming. Instead it was a bent contact and a battery, done at his house for a fraction of what they wanted.
