Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. We carry the extraction tools to pull the broken piece without yanking the whole ignition cylinder. The thing to know about the 2005 Armada is that the ignition housing on these has been around long enough that the wafers inside can be worn. If the key snapped because it was binding from wear, getting the piece out is step one, but the cylinder itself may need attention after. Once the fragment is out, we either decode the cut from the piece or pull the key code another way, then cut and program a fresh remote head key on the spot. First thing: check the battery, and make sure it is a CR1616 specifically. The 1616 is a thinner cell than the common watch batteries most stores push, and people end up with the wrong one more often than you'd think. A wrong or weak battery in the remote head key can trigger a warning before any real failure exists.

If the battery is correct and fresh, check that it is seated flat and the contacts are making clean contact. A little corrosion or a slightly bent clip reads the same as a dead battery to the system.

If all of that checks out and the warning is still there, the issue could be with the key itself, the immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition, or the vehicle's own battery voltage. Low vehicle battery is a sneaky one that mimics key problems on this generation. If it is not resolved with a fresh CR1616 seated properly, that is the point to call us rather than keep guessing.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2005 Armada. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

You need someone with the right equipment. The 2005 Armada does not have a DIY button-sequence or ignition-cycle trick to register a new remote head key. Programming goes through the OBD port with a tool that can calculate the PIN and write the new key to the vehicle's security system. If you already have at least one working key, the process is faster. All-keys-lost takes a bit longer because of the PIN retrieval step, but it is still a one-visit job. The fob you bought online is usable as long as it matches the factory spec for your vehicle - bring it and we can work with it.

The lock and unlock buttons on my Armada fob stopped working but the truck still starts fine. Are those two things on separate systems?

Yes, they are effectively independent. The transponder that authorizes the engine handles starting. The remote buttons transmit on a separate radio frequency to the body control module for door locks and related functions. So it is entirely possible for one side to work while the other fails.

When the remote functions die but the vehicle still starts, the first suspects are the battery and the button contacts inside the fob housing. A weak CR1616 will drop the transmit range before it kills the transponder signal, so you might lose remote function while the key still cranks the engine fine. If a fresh correct battery does not bring the remote back, the transmitter board inside the fob may have failed, or there is a receiver issue on the vehicle side. We can sort out which on-site.
