2005 Nissan Armada
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a regular key or a smart key?

A remote head key is the all-in-one unit your 2005 Armada uses. The blade goes into the ignition and turns like a traditional key. Built into the same housing are the transponder and the four remote buttons for the doors and other functions. It is not a smart key or proximity fob - there is no walk-up unlock or push-button start on this system. You insert and turn. The practical difference matters when something breaks.

Q: My Armada is showing a key warning on the dash. What should I check first?

First thing: check the battery, and make sure it is a CR1616 specifically. The 1616 is a thinner cell than the common watch batteries most stores push, and people end up with the wrong one more often than you'd think. A wrong or weak battery in the remote head key can trigger a warning before any real failure exists. If the battery is correct and fresh, check that it is seated flat and the contacts are making clean contact.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2005 Armada. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

You need someone with the right equipment. The 2005 Armada does not have a DIY button-sequence or ignition-cycle trick to register a new remote head key. Programming goes through the OBD port with a tool that can calculate the PIN and write the new key to the vehicle's security system. If you already have at least one working key, the process is faster.

Q: The lock and unlock buttons on my Armada fob stopped working but the truck still starts fine. Are those two things on separate systems?

Yes, they are effectively independent. The transponder that authorizes the engine handles starting. The remote buttons transmit on a separate radio frequency to the body control module for door locks and related functions. So it is entirely possible for one side to work while the other fails. When the remote functions die but the vehicle still starts, the first suspects are the battery and the button contacts inside the fob housing.

2005 Nissan Armada Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown Fillmore has a few spots where people park and leave their rig for a while. A woman who boards horses at a stable lot just outside of town had been watching my Nissan key videos on YouTube for months before she ever needed me.

She told me she liked seeing actual tools on an actual car, not animations. When her 2005 Armada started giving her grief, she already had my number saved.

The complaint was intermittent: sometimes the doors wouldn't respond, sometimes the engine cranked fine and then the next morning it was like the key forgot what car it belonged to. She had already swapped the battery herself, which was the right call, but she grabbed the wrong cell at the auto parts store. Easy mistake. The CR1616 is thin and a little obscure compared to what most people are used to buying.

I pulled into the lot, popped the fob housing, and confirmed the wrong battery was in there. Swapped in the correct CR1616, cleaned the contacts, and reseated everything. Ran through all four buttons, did a couple of starts, checked the range from across the lot where she usually walks in from the stable side.

That was it. No programming needed that day. She had done everything right except that one small spec difference in the battery. The dealer would have had her tow it in, run diagnostics, and handed her a bill she didn't need. She saved a good chunk just by calling someone who showed up.

Nissan Armada Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. We carry the extraction tools to pull the broken piece without yanking the whole ignition cylinder. The thing to know about the 2005 Armada is that the ignition housing on these has been around long enough that the wafers inside can be worn. If the key snapped because it was binding from wear, getting the piece out is step one, but the cylinder itself may need attention after.
