Out in Hollywood by the Sea, a mobile dog groomer had parked her 2020 Armada near the car wash vacuum area and was convinced she needed a dealer appointment to get a working key.
Someone told her that, then the dealer's website confirmed it, and an old forum thread sealed the deal. She'd already called the dealership. They quoted her a number that made her wince and told her the earliest opening was over a week out.
She found me instead.
When I pulled up, she was sitting on the bumper with her grooming gear stacked next to her, fob in hand, doing that thing where you keep pressing it hoping something changes. The Armada was locked. She had one fob that wasn't responding reliably and she was worried it had gotten wet during a grooming job.
I pulled out my programming gear and connected at the OBD port. The 2020 Armada's Intelligent Key system registers fobs through the diagnostic port - there's no ignition-turn sequence for a smart key on this generation, it requires proper equipment. I verified the existing fob, confirmed it was still enrolled, and got a read on what the system was seeing. The fob wasn't dead. It was intermittent, and intermittent on these is almost always the battery contact or a CR2032 that's lost its edge even though it still shows some voltage on a meter.
Opened the fob. Battery looked fine visually but tested low under load. Swapped it, reseated the contact, and then walked every function: lock, unlock, the start button response, and the backup fob-to-button start trick just to confirm range was solid.
It came back completely.
She didn't need a new key programmed. She needed someone who actually checked before assuming. That's the difference between a mobile tech who's done a few hundred of these and a service desk that schedules a full replacement by default. She loaded her gear, thanked me, and drove off while I was still packing up.
The dealer would have gotten there eventually. She would have waited a week, dropped the car off, and paid for a new fob she didn't need.
