Over near Del Sol Park in Oxnard, a guy flagged me down in a temple parking lot on a Sunday. He had a 2010 Nissan Armada that would crank, fire for about two seconds, then die. Classic NATS immobilizer fuel cutoff.
He told me another locksmith had already come out, charged him full price, handed him a key, and left. When the car kept dying, that tech blamed the BCM and walked away.
The car didn't have a module problem. It had a locksmith problem. Nissan's NATS5 immobilizer runs a timed security handshake during registration. If you rush it or drop out before the countdown finishes, the BCM accepts the key data temporarily but never commits it to permanent memory. The key looks programmed. It isn't.
I pulled my NSN14 Lishi and checked the mechanical cut first. Cuts were fine. Then I connected through OBD-II with my IM608, cleared the half-written key data from the BCM, and ran a clean NATS5 registration with the full security timer. No shortcuts.
His CWTWBU624 came back with all four buttons responding, passive entry working at both front handles, and a clean start with no fuel cutoff at two seconds. I showed him the confirmed registration on my screen so he could see it himself.
He'd already paid one locksmith for nothing, and I couldn't undo that. But I could make sure this one stuck, for a good chunk less than the dealer would have charged.
