I got a call from a woman parked near one of the older commercial buildings off the main stretch in Oxnard's Historic District. She had her 2013 Armada, a big silver one, and it had been throwing a key-not-detected warning on and off for about a week. That morning it just stopped cooperating entirely. She could not get a clean start.
She had already bought a replacement fob online. It was sitting in the cup holder still in the plastic bag.
That fob was unprogrammed, which is how they all ship. The Armada's Intelligent Key system does not do a self-registration sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button hold, no shortcut. The new fob has to be enrolled through the diagnostic port with the right equipment, and all registered fobs get rewritten in that process. Her old one, the one that had been acting up, would have been wiped along with any others on the account.
I pulled out the original fob first. CR2025 was the right cell and it was not dead, but the negative clip was sitting slightly high from a previous battery swap. Not making full contact. I corrected the clip, seated the cell properly, and the original fob started talking to the car again like nothing had happened.
But she had already bought the second fob, and she wanted both registered so she had a spare. That part did go through the diagnostic port. Both fobs enrolled, all buttons confirmed, door handle touch unlock on both front doors, three clean starts.
The online fob she bought was the right fit for this vehicle. Some people get lucky with that research. She just did not know the programming step was still required no matter where the fob came from.
Dealer had quoted her a number she described as "not worth repeating." She paid a fraction of that and had both keys working before lunch.
