My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call. The tools for this are different from what a hardware store carries, and the goal is to get the broken piece out without disturbing the ignition cylinder or the wafers inside it.

One thing to know about the 2012 Armada: the ignition cylinder on this generation has seen wear complaints from high-mileage owners, particularly on vehicles that have had the same key used hard for years. If the break happened because the key was already worn or the cylinder was stiff, there's a real chance the cylinder itself needs attention once the fragment is out. I'll tell you what I find when I'm in there.

What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2012 Armada?

The 2012 Armada uses Nissan's Intelligent Key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's immobilizer so the engine can start. It also handles your remote functions through the four buttons on the fob.

Inside the fob there's also a mechanical backup blade. If the fob battery dies completely, you can use that blade to get into the door manually, then hold the fob body against the start button while pressing the brake to use the backup signal path. The vehicle can read the fob at close range even with a dead battery.

If the fob housing cracks or a button stops working but the electronics are intact, I can often move the internals into a new shell instead of replacing and reprogramming the whole key. If the electronics are damaged, a full replacement gets cut and programmed on site.

My Nissan is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the CR2025 battery in the fob. It's the most common cause on this generation, and it can go from working fine to dead without much warning. Pop it open, seat a fresh CR2025 flat against the contacts, and retest.

If the new battery doesn't fix it, try the backup method: pull the mechanical blade out of the fob, use it to unlock the door, then hold the fob body directly against the start button while pressing the brake. That bypasses the normal wireless range and uses a short-range inductive signal instead.

If neither of those works, it gets more diagnostic. A weak vehicle battery can suppress Intelligent Key communication on this generation even when the fob is perfectly good, so check chassis voltage. Beyond that, the issue could be the fob itself, the antenna ring around the start button, or the immobilizer module. That's when you call me and I come to you in Hobson Park.

Can I buy a fob online and have you program it, or does it need to be a dealer part?

You can buy a fob online, but check the factory FCC ID on your current fob before you order anything. The 2012 Armada has a specific fob that needs to match. If someone sells you a fob with the wrong FCC ID, it won't program to your vehicle regardless of what tools are used.

If the FCC ID matches, an aftermarket fob sourced from a reputable supplier programs the same way a dealer part does. The programming happens through the diagnostic port and the vehicle doesn't know or care about the brand name on the back of the housing.

What I'd say is: let me source it. I carry tested blanks and I know what works on this vehicle. If you already bought one online, bring the fob and I'll tell you whether it's the right unit before we start.

Question 5

All my keys for the 2012 Armada are gone. Is that a bigger job than just adding a spare?

It's a different job, not necessarily a harder one, but it does take longer.

When there are no working keys, the immobilizer has to be reset through the diagnostic port before any new fob can be registered. That process has a timed sequence built into it, so you can't rush it. Typically that's a 30 to 45 minute job on site, and when it's done the new key is the only key the vehicle recognizes. Any fobs that were lost or stolen are erased from the system and can't start the car.

The thing owners worry about most with all-keys-lost is whether it requires a dealer. It doesn't. I carry the equipment to handle this in Hobson Park or wherever the vehicle is sitting.
