Probably not. If the push-button start still sees the fob and the passenger handle still triggers unlock, the fob itself is almost certainly fine. Touch unlock on the door handle is handled by a sensor in the handle and the wiring behind it, separate from whether the fob is communicating with the start system. Wipe down the handle area, especially around the sensor zone, and retest. Dirt and moisture can interfere with capacitive sensors.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2014 Armada. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2014 Armada smart key system does not have a DIY onboard programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combo, no sequence you can run from the driver's seat to enroll a new fob. I got a call from a guy in the Five Points area of Oxnard on a Tuesday evening. He worked nights, and his 2014 Armada had been giving him a key-not-detected warning on and off for about a week.

He'd already paid another locksmith to cut and program a replacement fob a little over a week before he called me. The car started fine that morning. By the time his shift ended, the push-button start wouldn't recognize the fob at all.

He figured it was the car. Electrical gremlin, maybe a BCM issue. He'd already started mentally budgeting for a dealer visit.

I pulled up to the lot and asked him to walk me through what the other guy had done. He described it the way a lot of people describe locksmith work they didn't fully understand: key got made, car started, guy left. That's it.

I checked the fob first. CR2025 inside, but it was sitting off-axis in the battery tray. Contacts were barely touching. That alone could cause intermittent detection. I seated it correctly and we tested. Still not consistent.

So I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port and looked at how the key was registered. What I found was that the fob had been enrolled but the transponder side wasn't fully matched to this vehicle's security system. The car had accepted it well enough to start a few times, but over subsequent key cycles the vehicle's security system flagged the mismatch and began rejecting it. It's a known failure mode when the programming step gets rushed or the wrong key shell is used.

I programmed a proper replacement fob to this specific Armada, verified all four buttons were functional, confirmed the door handle touch unlock worked on both front doors, and tested the mechanical blade in the driver's door slot. Then I watched him do a cold start himself, lock up, and walk away from the car. It saw the fob the moment he approached.

He didn't need a new immobilizer. He didn't need a dealer. He needed the job done right the first time, which is all I do.
