Got a call from a guy in Santa Barbara, down in the Funk Zone, standing next to his 1997 Maxima in a lot behind one of the tasting rooms. Key snapped right at the bow while he was turning the ignition. The blade stayed inside the cylinder and the plastic head with the transponder chip was in his hand.
He had already called the Nissan dealer. They told him the car needed to come in. That meant a tow, then a wait for them to extract the broken blade, then ordering a new key blank and programming the NATS. He asked how long. They said a couple of days depending on parts.
I got there in under an hour. Pulled the broken blade from the cylinder with an extractor set, took maybe two minutes. Then I cut a new NSN11 blank on my Triton, matched to the existing key code I pulled from the lock. The transponder side was the real job. His Maxima runs the first-gen NATS with a Philips PCF7930 fixed-code chip, so I cloned the original chip from his broken key head right into the new one. No OBD programming needed on this generation because the code lives on the chip itself and the NATS module reads it passively through the antenna ring around the ignition.
Whole thing was about 20 minutes. He walked back into the tasting room with a working key and never had to move the car.
