2022 Nissan Maxima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

As long as the original, assuming it's handled the same way. The programming doesn't wear out. The fob itself holds up fine under normal use. What shortens the life of these is physical abuse: cracked shells from drops, corroded battery contacts from moisture getting in, or a battery that sits dead inside the fob for months and leaks. CR2032 cells are cheap. Swap it once a year whether the fob is acting up or not.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. Every key I make is covered under warranty, and I come back to sort it out. On the 2022 Maxima, a post-programming failure usually points to one of three things: a battery contact issue in the fob, a registration that didn't fully complete during programming, or the immobilizer antenna having a separate underlying problem that the new key exposed rather than caused.

Q: I have a spare fob that came with the car. Does it need to be reprogrammed if I get a replacement made?

This is worth asking about before the job starts. The 2022 Maxima's key registration process can overwrite existing fobs depending on how the programming sequence is run. Some all-keys-registered routines require every fob you want to keep to be present during the session. If your spare isn't there when I program a new key, it could stop working. Bring every fob you own to the appointment.

Q: Can a relay attack actually steal a 2022 Maxima, and is there anything practical I can do about it?

Yes, relay attacks are real and proximity smart keys are the target. The attack works by amplifying the fob's signal from inside your home so the car thinks the key is right next to the door handle. The Maxima doesn't know the difference. A Faraday pouch blocks the signal when the key is at rest and costs almost nothing.

2022 Nissan Maxima Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A home inspector working out of the Moorpark College Area called me on a Monday. His 2022 Maxima was sitting in an apartment carport and his smart key had stopped being recognized by the car. Not intermittent. Just gone. Doors wouldn't respond to the fob, push-button start showed a key warning on the dash, and he was using the mechanical backup blade to get in and out.

He'd already called the dealer. Wednesday was the earliest they could take the car, and that meant arranging a tow on top of everything else. He was self-employed with inspections already on the calendar. Two days down wasn't just inconvenient. It was money he'd already committed to clients.

I was at the carport that afternoon. Ran the Nissan smart key programming sequence through the diagnostic port, registered the replacement fob, tested lock, unlock, and start button response from across the parking lot. Cut the emergency blade to match. The whole job was done before he had to leave for his last appointment of the day.

He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote, and more than that, he kept his week intact. The dealer comparison didn't even come up much. What mattered was Monday, not Wednesday.

Nissan Maxima Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Nissan vehicles?▼

For the 2022 Maxima specifically, I use OEM-spec key shells and electronics that are verified to match the factory fob. The reason this matters more on newer Nissans than on older ones is the proximity system. A cheap aftermarket shell can have slightly off tolerances in the battery tray, which causes intermittent contact issues that show up weeks later and are a pain to trace.
