2017 Nissan Maxima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2017 Maxima uses Nissan's Intelligent Key system. The fob communicates with the vehicle passively, meaning the car is reading it as you approach and while you're inside. Touch the door handle to unlock, get in, press the start button. The fob never has to leave your pocket. Inside the fob is also an emergency key blade, which slides out mechanically. That blade gets you into the car physically if the battery dies completely.

Q: Why does Nissan key programming take so long at the dealer compared to what the actual work involves?

The programming sequence itself is not long. The time adds up in layers around it. A repair order has to be opened. A certified tech has to be assigned and free. The diagnostic connection to the vehicle security system has to be established. On top of that, some of the registration steps include a timed countdown built into the process, which cannot be skipped regardless of how experienced the tech is.

Q: I have a spare fob for my 2017 Maxima but it was never programmed. Can I get it added without losing my working key?

Yes, and this is actually the easier scenario. When at least one working key is present, adding a second fob does not require a full all-keys-lost reset. The process is shorter, the timed steps are fewer, and both keys come out registered and verified at the end. The fob you bought online or picked up used just needs to be paired to your VIN. Bring the working key with you when I come out, and the whole job goes faster.

Q: My 2017 Maxima fob range got really short all of a sudden. Sometimes it only works when I'm right next to the car. Is the fob broken?

Short range is almost always the battery before it is anything else on these fobs. The CR2032 in the 2017 Maxima Intelligent Key can drop voltage gradually enough that you do not notice until the range collapses. At that point the dash warning may or may not have triggered yet. Start with a fresh CR2032 and make sure it seats flat against both contacts when you close the fob back up.

2017 Nissan Maxima Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Poinsettia, a mobile dog groomer flagged me down near the car wash vacuum area one evening. She had her 2017 Maxima, a back seat full of grooming gear, and a fob that had stopped doing its job.

The door handles weren't responding to touch, the fob range had dropped to almost nothing, and she was manually inserting the emergency key blade to get in every time. She'd already been told by a friend and confirmed by a quick forum search that Nissan key work had to go through the dealer.

She called me anyway, mostly out of curiosity.

I popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 inside looked original, which on a 2017 means it had been in there a while. Swapped it, seated it correctly, and tested all five buttons. Touch unlock on both front handles came right back. Range was back to normal across the parking lot.

That was the whole job. No programming, no diagnostic port, no appointment. Just a battery that had given everything it had over seven years and a contact that needed a proper seat.

She had been ready to leave the car at the dealer for a day and a half and pay for a full key replacement service. The actual problem was a two-minute fix. I told her to mark her calendar for six months out and do it again before it gets that far.

The dealer visit never happened. She drove home with a full load of gear and a fob that worked like it was new.

Nissan Maxima Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does it actually take to get a replacement key at the Nissan dealer?▼

The programming itself, once a tech is connected and the key is in hand, runs roughly 15 minutes. The rest is dealership workflow. You write up a repair order, wait for a certified tech with the right diagnostic equipment, they pull the vehicle security codes, run the registration sequence, then verify every function before they release the car.
