Got a call from a guy in the Mesa neighborhood in Santa Barbara. His 1999 Maxima had been fighting him for weeks. Key catching in the ignition, wiggling it around, pushing the steering wheel left while turning. The kind of routine you develop when you know something is wrong but you keep hoping it holds together.
He called the dealer. They quoted him for a full ignition cylinder replacement, new key, and NATS reprogramming. He was about to book it when a friend told him to try a locksmith first.
I drove out and checked the cylinder. The wafers were worn down, which is textbook on these fourth-gen Maximas with 150k-plus miles. The cylinder housing itself was fine. No reason to replace the whole unit.
I used my ACDP to pull the immobilizer data from the BCM as a backup before touching anything mechanical. Decoded the lock, swapped out the worn wafers, and cut a fresh NSN11T2 key matched to the repaired cylinder. Programmed the new Philips PCF7936 transponder chip through the NATS system. Showed him the old wafers side by side with the new ones so he could see the rounded edges where they had stopped gripping.
Ignition turns smooth now. He kept a part that was not actually broken and paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
