A guy down in Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard called about his 2020 Maxima. He depended on it to get to dialysis three times a week, and his only smart key's remote buttons had quit. Then I connected through OBD to the BCM, which on these eighth-gen Maximas is the module that runs the NATS C1A security layer. Registered the new KR5TXN7 fob, confirmed the Hitag AES handshake, and paired it to the car.
While I was there, I cracked open his original fob. The CR2032 was low, but the real problem was a slightly lifted battery contact. Cleaned it, reseated the cell, paired that one fresh too. Both fobs tested clean on all five buttons, including the remote start.
He didn't have to miss a treatment or get a ride to a dealer. The whole thing took about 35 minutes in the parking lot. He could have spent half a day at a dealership and paid a lot more for one key. He left with two working fobs and got to his appointment on time.
