2004 Nissan Maxima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I really need to tow my Maxima to the dealer for a key replacement?

No. Dealers will often push towing because their equipment is stationary and they need the car in their bay to access the OBD port. That's a dealer workflow problem, not a technical requirement. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic tools can do the same job at the vehicle. The OBD port on a 2004 Maxima is under the dash on the driver's side, accessible in any parking spot or driveway.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you make a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. We verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker before anything gets cut or programmed. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done on site in a few minutes instead of at a service counter.

Q: I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can I just program it myself?

For the remote portion only, there is an onboard procedure some owners have had luck with on this generation, involving the door lock switch and ignition cycling in a specific sequence. It does not always work and it does not work for everyone, but it exists. The transponder side is a different matter. Programming the transponder chip in the key head to the immobilizer on a 2004 Maxima requires a capable OBD-based programming tool.

Q: My 2004 Maxima key fob has short range and sometimes doesn't work at all. Is the key dying?

Short range on this fob is almost always the CR1616 going weak. These cells lose voltage gradually, so you get inconsistent results before it fails completely. Swap the battery first. If a fresh CR1616 doesn't fix it, check that the battery contacts inside the key head are making clean contact. Corrosion or a slightly bent clip will give you the same flaky behavior as a dead battery.

2004 Nissan Maxima Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked in the Silver Strand neighborhood of Oxnard. He had one key left for his 2004 Maxima and the remote portion had stopped working. Locks, unlock, nothing. The car still started fine, so he'd been doing everything manually for about two weeks before he decided to call around.

He'd already contacted a Nissan dealer. They told him to bring the car in, quoted the job in pieces, and the total came out to a number that made him stop and look for another option.

I drove out to him. He was parked a block from the beach, car in the driveway.

I opened the key head, swapped the CR1616, reseated everything clean. Tested. Still nothing on the remote. The battery wasn't the issue. The key needed to be reprogrammed, which I handled through the OBD port right there in the driveway. The whole job, including a function check on all four buttons, took about 25 minutes.

He asked if I could make a spare while I was already there. I did. Two working keys, both cut, both programmed, both tested. He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted just for the one.

The beach breeze, the parking situation, the quick turnaround. That's a Silver Strand job.
