Got a call out to Oxnard Shores on a Tuesday morning. Woman parked her 2000 Maxima in the lot near her building the night before, and by morning her only key had snapped at the base of the blade where the plastic head meets the metal. Part of the blade was still in her door lock.
She had already called a dealer. They told her to tow it in.
I drove out, pulled the broken blade fragment from the door lock with a broken key extractor, and decoded the lock cylinder to get the cut. Cut a new key blank with the correct chip type for that year, ran the programming through the OBD port, and tested it in the ignition.
It started on the first turn.
The whole job took about 35 minutes from the moment I parked my van. She watched the whole thing from under the breezeway, which I actually prefer because it answers questions before she has a chance to wonder. She said she thought the dealer estimate was just the going rate. It was not.
