A guy near Old Mission Santa Barbara called me one morning because his key snapped in the ignition of his 2005 Murano. Half the blade was jammed in the cylinder, the other half was in his hand. He couldn't turn the car off cleanly and didn't want to force anything.
I got there and used a DAT17 Lishi to extract the broken piece without scoring the ignition wafers. The 2005 Murano uses the NSN14 keyway on the doors and a DAT17 profile on the ignition, which trips people up sometimes. Once the broken bit was out, I decoded the lock from the wafer positions and cut a fresh NI04 transponder blade from the readings.
His KBRTN001 remote fob was fine, sitting in his pocket, batteries good. The fob on these first-gen Muranos is a standalone remote, not an integrated smart key like the later models. So the only job was cutting a new blade and registering the 4D60 chip to the NATS5 system through the OBD-II port. The immobilizer accepted it on the first registration cycle. No drama.
He was driving again in under an hour from the time he called. The dealer route for his area quoted a tow plus a multi-day wait, and a price that made the tow look cheap. A snapped key at the wrong moment feels like a disaster. On these first-gen Muranos, it is one of the simpler jobs I run.
