I was over on the Mesa on a Tuesday when the smog shop on the way down toward Meigs called me. Not a typical referral.
A guy had brought his 2013 Murano in for a routine smog check and mentioned, almost as an aside, that a locksmith had tried to do an all-keys-lost job on it the week before. The car battery sagged mid-sequence, the programming handshake broke, and the immobilizer module went into a fault state. The other tech left. The car would crank but not start, and now the owner was stuck at the smog shop with a car that wouldn't pass anything because it wouldn't run long enough to complete the drive cycle.
I brought a jump pack and my primary programming setup, plus a backup reader in case I needed to go deeper into the module directly. The first thing I did was clamp the jump pack to hold voltage steady. That part matters more than people think. A lot of failed key jobs on these Muranos come down to the module catching a brown-out mid-write and throwing itself into a protective lockout. It is not a defect, it is the system doing exactly what it is supposed to do when it senses something went wrong.
Once the supply was stable, I cleared the fault state and ran a clean programming sequence from scratch. The new fob learned on the first attempt. Total time was around an hour and a half, which is longer than a standard job, but this wasn't a standard job. The smog shop owner watched the whole thing. He wanted to understand what had gone wrong so he could explain it to the next customer who came in with a similar story.
The dealer alternative was a flatbed tow plus a multi-day wait. What the owner got instead was a working car before the smog shop closed for the day.
