2014 Nissan Murano
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2014 Murano uses Nissan's Intelligent Key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle so it can recognize you're nearby, and the push-button start reads the fob's signal before it allows the engine to run. There are four buttons for remote functions, and inside the fob body there's also a mechanical insert key for situations where the battery dies or you need to manually access a lock.

Q: My Murano says it can't detect the key. What should I check first?

Start with the fob battery. The 2014 Murano fob takes a CR2032, and these drain faster than most people expect. A low battery won't always kill the signal completely at first, it'll just get flaky: inconsistent range, the door handle touch sensor going unresponsive, the start button hesitating.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my Murano?

Yes, as long as it's the correct fob for the 2014 Murano. Bring it and we can register it. A few things to know going in: the insert key blade inside that fob will still need to be cut to your vehicle's bitting, and that's part of what we do on site. Also confirm the fob you bought matches the factory fob that came with your car.

Q: All my keys are lost. Is that a bigger job than just copying an existing one?

It is a different job, yeah. When there are no working keys present, the system needs a full reset before any new fob can be registered. That process has a built-in timed sequence and takes longer than a standard add-a-key. The upside is that once it's done, any fobs that went missing get erased from the vehicle's memory so they can't be used to start the car. We handle all-keys-lost on the 2014 Murano regularly.

2014 Nissan Murano Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a delivery driver parked at a repair shop off Las Positas in Santa Barbara. He was done with locksmiths at this point.

He'd already paid one of those Google Ads bottom-feeders who showed up, collected a big number, and handed him back a key that would fire the engine but had completely dead remote functions. Four buttons, none of them working. He found me through Google Guaranteed and the first thing he asked was how to confirm I was actually licensed.

Fair question. I read him my BSIS license number right there on the call. He pulled up the state lookup while we were still talking and verified it himself. That's exactly what he should have done.

When I got to him, I could see what the previous guy had done wrong. The fob had been programmed but only partially. The start function had been paired, and that was it. The remote entry side never got registered correctly. On the 2014 Murano's Intelligent Key system, those two functions are enrolled through the same process, and if you cut it short or use the wrong sequence, you end up with exactly what he had: a key that starts the car and nothing else.

I went through the full registration using my Smart Pro, ran through all four buttons, walked the doors, and confirmed the start button was reading the fob cleanly. Everything came back. He stood there clicking the lock button a few times just to hear it work.

He paid exactly what I quoted. Not a dollar more. The dealer comparison came up and he laughed. He'd already looked it up.

Nissan Murano Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, and it's a job we handle on site. Broken key extraction uses specialized tools to pull the fragment out without tearing up the ignition cylinder. That said, once a key snaps off inside, the internal wafers can take some damage depending on how it broke and how much someone tried to force it afterward. We'll tell you honestly whether the cylinder is still serviceable after the piece comes out.
