A guy from the Rincon Point stretch of Carpinteria reached out because his Murano's push-to-start had started going moody. Not dead, just inconsistent. Sometimes it found the fob immediately. Sometimes he'd be standing at the door for a few seconds waiting for the handle to register, then he'd get a key-not-detected warning on the dash. He'd had a key made somewhere else a few weeks earlier and assumed the car was developing an electrical issue.
I came out to him on site. The first thing I did was pull the fob apart and look at what was actually in there. The CR2032 read low on the meter, and the contacts had a slight gap from what looked like the case being forced open wrong at some point. That alone could explain the intermittent detection. But when I ran a check on the key data itself, it was clear the previous programming hadn't taken cleanly. The fob was enrolled, but not stable across all the handshake checks the Murano's security system does over repeated cycles.
I programmed a fresh key to the vehicle, seated a new CR2032 correctly, and went through the full function check: door handles, push-to-start, lock, unlock, the panic button, and the remote start button. Everything confirmed solid before I closed my bag.
He mentioned what the dealer quoted him the first time around. I told him he'd already spent money on the bad key and this was still going to come out ahead of that dealer number by a meaningful margin.
