Got a call from a woman out near Douglas Family Preserve in Santa Barbara. She had just loaded her dogs into the back of her 2017 Murano after a long trail walk and the push button would not respond. Dash was blank. Fob buttons did nothing. She figured the key battery finally died.
When I got there, the CR2032 tested fine. Good voltage, clean contacts. That changed the direction fast.
I plugged into the OBD port and pulled codes from the BCM and NATS module. The BCM, which on this generation is the 284B2 board, had a communication fault with the Intelligent Key antenna amplifier. The third-gen Murano runs a 4x4 antenna layout, one in each door handle, one in the cabin, one in the trunk area, and the cabin antenna had dropped off. Connector had worked itself loose at the harness under the center console.
Reseated the plug, cleared the codes, and ran a full cycle. Registered both her fobs, KR5S180144014 five-button units with remote start. Tested lock, unlock, panic, remote start from about 40 feet out near the trailhead fence. Tested the backup start method too, holding the logo side of the fob against the start button, just so she would know the move if a battery ever did go flat on her.
She kept saying she thought she needed a whole new key. Just a loose connector and the right scan tool.
