2006 Nissan Murano
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you're not one of those scam locksmiths?

Scam locksmiths follow a pattern that's pretty easy to spot once you know it. Low number on the phone, price triples when they show up and you're stuck. They can't tell you what tool they use on a 2006 Nissan, they can't explain how the Intelligent Key system works, and they can't give you a real estimate before arriving.

Q: Will a replacement key work exactly like the factory original?

Yes. Once programmed correctly, the replacement fob communicates with your Murano's vehicle security system the same way the original did. Lock, unlock, proximity detection, and the third button all respond normally. I test every function on the spot before I hand the key over -- I'm not packing up until the car starts and every button does what it's supposed to do. Verification at the end of the job isn't extra. It's just how the job gets done.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2006 Murano. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2006 Murano Intelligent Key system does not have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence the way some older key-in-ignition setups do. Adding or replacing a fob requires a diagnostic tool communicating through the OBD port to register the new fob with the vehicle security system. The factory FCC ID on the fob has to match what the system expects, and the module has to formally accept the new fob before it will operate.

Q: My 2006 Murano starts fine but the doors won't lock or unlock from the fob. What's going on?

This one comes up more than you'd think on these. The Intelligent Key system on the 2006 Murano handles door functions and the ignition circuit somewhat independently, so it's possible for the start function to seem fine while the door lock and unlock response goes dead or intermittent. First thing to check is the CR2032 in the fob.

2006 Nissan Murano Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a smog shop off the main drag in Santa Barbara, not far from Hope Ranch. Their customer had a 2006 Murano that another locksmith had tried to work on. The other guy attempted an all-keys-lost replacement, the car battery sagged mid-sequence during the security handshake, the immobilizer landed in a fault state, and the locksmith left. Just left.

The smog shop called me because the car wasn't going anywhere and they needed the bay.

I brought my jump pack and my backup ACDP module, because a power interruption mid-programming on these Muranos can push the module into a state where a standard OBD approach won't get traction. First thing I did was put the jump pack on the battery and let the voltage stabilize before touching anything else. Then I cleared the fault codes through the OBD port before starting any programming sequence. Once the module reset cleanly, the new fob registered on the first attempt.

The whole thing took close to an hour and a half, which is longer than a normal Murano key job. The extra time was all recovery from what the first tech left behind.

I walked the smog shop guys through what had gone wrong so they'd recognize the signs next time. Power stability during programming isn't optional on these -- it's the job.

Nissan Murano Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Nissan vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith license (LCO#6792) and carries full liability insurance. I'm also a NASTF Vehicle Security Professional, which gives me authorized access to the security data and programming protocols needed for vehicles like the 2006 Murano. Not every locksmith who shows up with a laptop actually has the credentials or the right tools for the vehicle security system on these.
