I was parked on Linden Avenue near Downtown Carpinteria when a guy flagged me down from across the street. He'd been at a shop nearby waiting on a friend and came out to find his 2019 Murano sitting there ignoring his fob. Not a key-not-detected warning, not a beep, just nothing. I opened the fob on the hood of my van. The CR2032 he'd installed was fine, but the positive contact had a slight upward bow from whoever had pried the old one out. It wasn't making full contact across the whole surface. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, closed it back up, and walked thirty feet down the sidewalk. Locked, unlocked, the start button saw it from inside the car without him holding anything against it.
Then I did the part he wasn't expecting. I walked every handle, tested the touch sensors on all four doors, ran all five buttons, started it three times from different distances. He kept asking if I was done. I told him I was done when I was sure.
He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need a dealer. He needed the right small fix, done on the street in Downtown Carpinteria, in about twenty minutes.
