2010 Nissan Murano
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement Intelligent Key fob last on a 2010 Murano?

A properly made replacement should last as long as the original. The programming doesn't wear out or expire. The two things that actually shorten fob life on this generation are battery contact corrosion and cracked shells from drops. CR2032 cells in these fobs typically run a year or more under normal use. If yours is draining faster than that, check the contacts inside the fob housing for any green oxidation. A light clean fixes it.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. That's what the warranty is for. On the 2010 Murano specifically, a fob that programs fine and then goes intermittent is usually a contact issue or a fob quality issue, not a programming failure. Owners on Nissan forums describe a pattern where the remote functions drop out but the car still starts, or the other way around.

Q: My 2010 Murano shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What's going on?

New battery doesn't always mean good battery. CR2032 cells from certain retail blister packs sit on shelves long enough to lose capacity before you ever open them. First check: try a different brand cell and make sure it's seated flat with the positive side facing the right direction. If the warning keeps coming back with a fresh battery properly seated, the next thing to look at is the antenna loop that reads the fob inside the cabin.

Q: I have one working key for my 2010 Murano. Can I get a spare made before I lose that one?

Yes, and you should. Adding a spare while you still have a working key is significantly faster and less expensive than an all-keys-lost situation. All-keys-lost on this system requires a full Intelligent Key reset through the diagnostic port, which takes longer and involves a timed sequence that can't be rushed. With one key present, the process is shorter and the original key stays registered. The spare gets added alongside it.

2010 Nissan Murano Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already working in Santa Barbara on a Friday when a second call came in from The Riviera. Group of friends, 2010 Murano, wouldn't start. It was late, they'd been out to dinner, and nobody had dealt with a dead Intelligent Key fob before. One of them had already called the dealer's after-hours line and been told to wait until Monday morning.

They called me mostly to ask if there was any point.

I told them about the backup start procedure and walked one of them through holding the fob against the button. The car started. That bought them enough to not be stranded right then, but the fob still needed a fresh CR2032 and I was close enough to just come do it properly.

I got there, popped the fob, swapped the battery, seated the contacts correctly, and walked all four buttons plus the door handles. Everything came back clean. No reprogramming needed because the fob had never lost its pairing, just its power.

The dealer appointment they'd been quoted was three days out. They drove home that same night.

Nissan Murano Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key fobs on Nissan Intelligent Key jobs?▼

For this generation of Murano, I'm particular about the fob blank. Aftermarket housings vary a lot in build quality, and the internal contact board matters more than people expect. A cheap blank can fit, program, and then develop intermittent failures within a few months because the board flex or contact material isn't up to the original spec. Nissan dealers won't program third-party fobs from the internet, and there's a real reason for that beyond just protecting their parts margin.
