2003 Nissan Sentra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2003 Nissan Sentra Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a couple in Meiners Oaks on a weeknight. They were passing through Ojai on a road trip and their only key had stopped starting the car. Engine would crank, almost catch, then die. They figured it was mechanical at first, checked the fuel, nothing obvious. Then they remembered the key had taken a drop in a parking lot two days earlier.

They'd already called the Nissan dealer. Tow the car in, earliest opening the next afternoon, and the quote was enough to make them hesitate. They found me online about an hour later.

I drove out to where they were parked. The 2003 Sentra uses a transponder key with no remote, no fob, nothing fancy. Just a key with a chip in the plastic head. The blade was fine, cut was good, but the chip had gone dark. Damaged from the drop, or just aged out, hard to say for certain.

I cut a new key blank to match the vehicle, programmed the chip through the OBD port, and tested it. First turn, started clean.

They were back on the road that same night, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and without a tow or an overnight wait. The whole job was done in the motel lot under a parking light.
