Got a call one evening from a couple staying at a place near Ojai Valley Inn. Road trip retirees, one key between them, and the thing just stopped turning in the ignition.
They had already called the nearest Nissan dealer. Tow it in, earliest opening is tomorrow afternoon, and the quote made them go quiet on the phone. They found me online and asked how fast I could get to Ojai.
I pulled into the lot about 40 minutes later. The key looked rough. The blade was worn down on the shoulder cuts, which is normal on a 20-year-old Sentra key that's been on the same ring since new. The transponder chip inside was fine. The NATS5 module on the BCM wasn't throwing any codes. The problem was purely mechanical: the worn blade was no longer lifting the wafers cleanly in the ignition cylinder.
I pulled the key code from the lock, cut a fresh NSN14 blank on my machine in the van, and used my VVDI Key Tool to write the PCF7936 chip so the immobilizer would recognize it. Connected through the OBD-II port under the dash, pulled the NATS pin, registered the new key. Whole thing took maybe 20 minutes.
The husband turned the key and the engine caught on the first try. He looked at his wife like he wanted credit for finding my number. She gave him nothing.
They drove out the next morning with a working key and no tow bill.
